Eight people were injured after a man rammed a pickup truck into a crowded bus stop in Tel Aviv, Israel on Tuesday, before exiting the vehicle and attempting to stab multiple people.

One man who witnessed the attack said he didn’t realize at first that it was a deliberate attack.

“We don’t get terror attacks, or such things here, so for a second you forget it could be a ramming attack,” said Liron Birash, a sports teacher who workers in the area.

“As soon as he exited through the window, he came right out the window, not through the door, like in a movie, with a knife in hand he started chasing civilians – than you understand its an attack.”

The 20-year-old Palestinian man, from the Israeli-occupied West Bank, was shot dead by an armed civilian, police said.

Israel’s Shin Bet security agency said he had entered without a permit and had no record of security offences.

Hamas has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for the IDF military raid of a refugee camp in the West Bank town of Jenin.
