Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has promised a new government that is inclusive, but at the same time governed by Islamic law. Diplomats say the United Nations needs to try to broaden that pledge.
Veteran UN diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi was the only UN official to meet the Taliban’s founder Mullah Omar. He led the Bonn process in 2001 that chose Hamid Karzai as interim president.
He told Al Jazeera that the UN now needs to step up.
