A ground assault by the Taliban killed the Islamic State militant who spearheaded the August 2021 suicide bombing at the Kabul airport that killed 13 U.S. troops and about 170 Afghans during America’s chaotic withdrawal from the country, U.S. officials confirmed Tuesday.
He was reportedly killed during a series of battles early this month in southern Afghanistan between the Taliban and the Islamic State group’s affiliates, according to several officials. His name has not been released.
Former national security advisor H.R. McMaster said ties between the Taliban and Al Qaeda are “as strong as ever” despite the recent death of the ISIS leader.
