Ukraine was high on the agenda as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo.
This is Scholz's first trip to Asia as Chancellor, and he chose Japan as the regional starting point. The move is a departure from previous protocol -- his recent predecessors have gone to China first - and could signal a shift in focus.
After years of pacifism, Germany recently shifted policy by authorizing sales of heavy weaponry to Ukraine, and by increasing its defense budget. Now Japan is also considering taking similar steps.
