A powerful earthquake struck Taiwan Wednesday morning, killing at least nine people, injuring hundreds and causing chaos across the island of 23 million people.

The 7.4-magnitude quake, the strongest recorded in Taiwan since 1999, was centered off the east coast of rural Hualien County and could be felt as far away as Taipei and China, damaging roads and buildings, leading to evacuations from schools and offices. A tsunami warning was initially issued, but later lifted.
