Australian police are trying to understand why a man attacked shoppers in Sydney, stabbing to death six people, including a mother protecting her baby.

Police said the attacker, believed to be a 40-year-old man, acted alone and was shot dead by a female police officer.

A baby is among several victims in a critical condition in hospital.
