The suicide of a young man in Indian-administered Kashmir has highlighted the struggle of families accused of dissent as hundreds of people have their salaries frozen.
Before his death, Shoaib Bashir Mir stated in this video that the government punished his father by withdrawing his teaching salary for more than two years effectively forcing him into poverty.
Mir’s death had an immediate impact on the region. The government released hundreds of wages that had been withheld, but it also ordered a special task force to investigate those who have been accused of dissent.

Al Jazeera’s Laura Burdon-Manley reports.
