Stretford byelection result 'disappointing but not bad' for Conservatives says Lord Hayward

The results in the Stretford and Urmston byelection are "disappointing but not bad" for the Conservatives, according to polling expert and Tory peer Lord Hayward.

Lord Hayward, who as a Conservative MP analysed polls for the Thatcher and Major governments, told Sky News that the fall in Tory vote in the Manchester seat was actually lower than polls suggested.

He also pointed out there was a smaller swing than in the City of Chester byelection two weeks ago.
