Stephen Sondheim, the songwriter and composer who reshaped American musical theatre in the second half of the 20th century with his intelligent, intricately rhymed lyrics, his evocative melodies and willingness to tackle unusual subjects, has died.

Sondheim influenced several generations of songwriters, particularly with such landmark musicals as “Sweeney Todd,” “Follies,” and “Company.”

Six of Sondheim’s musicals won Tony awards for best score and he also won a Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award, five Olivier Awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Sondheim died Friday at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut. He was 91 years old.
