The Star Blanket Cree Nation leadership announced Thursday that ground search at the former Qu'Appelle Indian Residential School found more than 2,000 "anomalies," however they stressed they don't think this means those are all unmarked graves.
Councillor Sheldon Poitras said moving forward they hoped to confirm what is under the ground, potentially through core drilling.
Sask. Chief Michael Starr spoke about the ground search, saying "our hearts are heavy today."
"I acknowledge that this is not our fault what we're doing here," he said. "We acknowledge that. We are just doing the necessary work what was brought here and what was given to us in terms of the land."
The anomalies could be anything from sticks and stones to human remains, Poitras said.
