Burnt vehicles and patrolling soldiers occupied the streets of Sri Lanka on Wednesday, as the government extended a nationwide curfew following violent clashes over the government's handling of a devastating economic crisis.

Military troops carrying guns stood guard at multiple checkpoints in the commercial capital, after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's government outlined broad powers for the military and police to detain and question people without arrest warrants.

Violent clashes this week have left eight people dead and more than 200 injured, while the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the president's elder brother, has failed to douse public anger. Protesters have said they also wanted his brother to stand down as president.

Sri Lanka, with a population of 22 million people, has been suffering its worst economic crisis in history, with a severe shortage of foreign exchange stalling essential imports, including drugs and fuel.
