U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Friday the appointment of former DOJ Public Integrity Section Chief Jack Smith as special counsel to oversee two investigations into former president Donald Trump.

The first case will investigate whether any person or entity unlawfully interfered with the transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election or the certification of the electoral college vote.

The second involves classified documentation or presidential records, as well as the possible obstruction of that investigation with the removal of hundreds of documents from the White House that were moved to Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence.

"I strongly believe that the normal processes of this department can handle all investigations with integrity. And I also believe that appointing a special counsel at this time is the right thing to do. The extraordinary circumstances presented here, demand it. Mr. Smith is the right choice to complete these matters in an even-handed and urgent manner," Garland said.
