Villagers joined firefighters on Monday, as they struggled to contain a wildfire that has been raging for six days near a resort in Costa del Sol, Spain.

About 1,000 firefighters and some 50 aircraft have been working to put out the fire, which has so far burned 7,780 hectares of forest since it broke out on Wednesday.

Fanned by strong winds, the wildfire was sparked in the mountainous Sierra Bermeja area above Estepona, a popular spot with tourists and retirees.

Officials are investigating whether the fire may have been deliberately set.
