Elon Musk's SpaceX launched its third, uncrewed test launch of its Starship on Thursday, a futuristic vehicle designed to eventually carry astronauts to the moon and beyond, lifting off into orbit.

Though the Starship was intended to "splash down" in the Indian Ocean after conducting three tests, it was presumed lost after losing contact with Starlink and the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) during its high-speed re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.

Despite the loss of the Starship, the team succeeded in multiple of its experimental objectives. Firstly, the Super Heavy booster stage of the rocket seemingly made its way back to Earth, around the Gulf of Mexico — as opposed to the previous launch, in which it exploded. The booster's camera feed on Thursday, however, cut off shortly before it was estimated to the land, so its status has not yet been confirmed.

Additionally, Starship's propellant transfer test was conducted successfully. While they skipped the restart of one of the Raptor engines on Starship's upper stage, they were able to test the opening and closing of the payload door.

SpaceX's Starship vehicle and its Super Heavy booster are the world's tallest and most powerful rocket, according to reports. When stacked together, they stand 400 feet tall (122 meters), with the first stage powered by 33 Raptor engines, while the Starship upper stage carries six Raptors.

SpaceX has designed the Starship launch system to be fully reusable and hopes to use it for deep-space exploration, heavy-lift launches and space tourism. The company has already sold two private trips around the moon on Starship, with NASA picking Starship to land its Artemis 3 astronauts on the moon by 2026.
