In the early days of the pandemic, South Korea saw the highest rise in COVID-19 infections outside China and was praised for its rapid and innovative cooperation between the private sector and government. Diagnostics company Seegene pioneered mass PCR testing, distributing a third of a billion kits globally and now leads a worldwide initiative to share expertise for future pandemics. South Korea is also cooperating with other governments, with many countries expressing a desire to share experiences. However, there has been a lack of cooperation between the developed and developing worlds on creating, funding, and distributing vaccines. There is also growing awareness of the populist backlash and science skepticism resulting from tackling Covid-19, underscoring that the next global pandemic is a matter of 'when,' not 'if.'

Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride reports from Seoul, South Korea.
