South Africa to administer unapproved COVID-19 vaccine to health-care workers

South Africa will start vaccinating front-line health workers next week with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that is still in testing — an unorthodox strategy announced Wednesday by health officials. South Africa's health ministers say a small study suggests the AstraZeneca vaccine is only minimally effective against the 501Y.V2 variant, first identified in South Africa. This comes as WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) said on Wednesday that AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective and should be deployed widely across all age groups, including in countries where the South African variant of the coronavirus may reduce its efficacy.
