South Africa's African National Congress (ANC) party vowed on Sunday to heed the "clear message" from voters after suffering a historic decline in support in last week's general election, slashing its majority and forcing it to seek coalition partners for the first time since taking power at the end of apartheid.
Voters, angry at joblessness, inequality and power shortages slashed support for the ANC — the former liberation movement of the late Nelson Mandela — to 40 per cent in Wednesday's election, down from 57.5 per cent in the 2019 parliamentary vote.
“Most of the people, they are happy about what is happening now. They are happy about the coalition because of — you see what was happening, there was a state capture. People were looting money, but no one has been, went to jail or whatever, so, people are happy about what is happening now,” said Soweto resident David Mweyi.
