Silvio Berlusconi has died at the age of 86. Italy’s controversial, former and longest-serving prime minister passed away in San Raffaele Hospital on June 12, three days after being hospitalized for the treatment of chronic leukemia.

Over the last seven years, Berlusconi has been in and out of the hospital. In 2016 he suffered life-threatening heart problems, in 2020 and 2021 he was hospitalized with COVID-19, and just this April, it was revealed he had leukemia after he was put in intensive care while experiencing breathing difficulties.

Despite repeated scandals over sex-fueled parties and allegations of corruption, Berlusconi — also a successful business tycoon — served as Italy’s prime minister, in four different parties, between 1994-1995, 2001-2006 and 2008-2011.

Despite their differences, current Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid respects to Berlusconi in a national video address on Monday, calling him both “a fighter” and “one of the most influential men in Italy’s history.”
