The UK's ambassador to Ukraine has described her "shock" at seeing bombed out schools, playgrounds and hospitals on her return to Kyiv.

Speaking to Sky News, Melinda Simmons said it was "obvious" that "right from the beginning, this was about hitting the Ukrainian nation" rather than targeting its military capabilities.

She added that returning to Ukraine's capital - after being evacuated to Lviv shortly after the Russian invasion began - was "incredibly emotional".
