1. A resurgent Hurricane Ian barreled north toward a second landfall in South Carolina, a day after carving a path of destruction across central Florida that left rescue crews racing to reach trapped residents along the state's Gulf Coast.

2. Hundreds of Russian troops in Ukraine were encircled in one of their main garrisons, on the verge of one of the worst defeats of the war, overshadowing President Vladimir Putin's celebration to proclaim his annexation of seized land.

3. Gas leaks along Gazprom-led Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines are very likely the result of state action, Swedish energy minister Khashayar Farmanbar said.

4. President Joe Biden's liberal appointee Ketanji Brown Jackson, set to hear arguments for the first time as a U.S. Supreme Court justice, joins the nation's top judicial body at a consequential time when its conservative majority has shown an increasing willingness to exert its power on a range of issues.

5. The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to pass a bill funding the federal government through Dec. 16, avoiding an embarrassing partial shutdown less than six weeks before the midterm elections when control of Congress is at stake.
