"Speaking to Ana Kasparian and John Iadarola of The Young Turks, Senator Bernie Sanders discussed ongoing negotiations on a Covid relief bill and said a liability shield and lack of direct payments are non-starters for him.

A highlight from the interview happened towards the end when Sanders told Iadarola that, "If the Democrats cave on this issue, essentially, what you are conceding to McConnell and to the Republicans is that we're going to go along with 'austerity economics.'"

“That means nothing. That we’re not going to do anything significant in climate change, in infrastructure, in child care, in expanding healthcare, we’re not going to do anything significant in terms of pushing forward the agenda that Biden has supported.”

“This moment right now is not only how we deal with the crisis today. It is how we look to the future and whether we’re going to fight to protect working families or whether we go into an austerity moment.”

When asked about bipartisan support for passing the defense bill, Sanders said that defense spending and tax breaks for billionaires were "not a problem [but] when it comes to a moment in American history where the working families of America today are in worst economic distress than anytime since the Great Depression...suddenly we're very worried about money."

“I’m going to do everything that I can to make sure that Congress does not leave for its Christmas vacation until we take care of the needs of working families.”

Kasparian brought up Nancy Pelosi's handling of negotiations and pointed out the Speaker's hardball strategy prior to the election and her shift towards accepting a weaker relief bill.

Sanders responded, "What the Democrats have got to do is draw a line in the sand and stand up and fight back."

"Enough is enough," he added. "Working people in this country are going to get their $1200 check that they desperately need and the $500 for the kids."*
