The city of Medellin in Colombia is home to the thousands of internally displaced people, IDPs, forced to flee their homes, to avoid the effects of armed conflict, violence, human rights violations or natural disasters, but have not crossed an international border. For Ana, this meant her having to abandon her home, her town and her livelihood — farming. In Medellin, though, she has joined a UNHCR partnership programme that focuses on traditional as well as hydroponic gardening. Bringing together IDPs and community members, the farm allows the transfer of knowledge between generations, and is a safe space for IDPs to bond and work together, to support and provide an outlet for their shared process of healing and being free.
