Security in Afghanistan “not going in the right direction,” Pentagon says
John Kirby, press secretary for the U.S. Department of Defense, said on Monday that they are watching the security situation in Afghanistan closely, but admitted it was “not going in the right direction.”
Kirby said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin believes Afghanistan forces will be able to “make a big difference on the battle field,” despite advancements by the Taliban in recent days.
The press secretary said the U.S. will continue to support Afghan forces “when and where feasible,” but said it was “their country to defend.”
