The families of the four Australian airmen killed after their Taipan helicopter crashed off Hamilton Island last year, still don’t know why. Of course there’s been much speculation that the make of chopper was a notoriously unreliable dud, and to that end, the Defence Department has discarded its fleet of 46 Taipans. They’ll never fly again. But four months ago, 9 News National Affairs Editor Andrew Probyn revealed there could be another reason for the fatal crash. Now he has obtained details from a secret report about what was happening in the crucial minutes before the tragedy.
