U.S. Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson pushed back against criticism from Republican senators on Tuesday during the second day of her Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing, tackling questions on critical race theory, her religious beliefs and her response to crimes against children.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tx.) questioned her about children being taught about critical race theory and asked her whether she believed "babies are racist." After a long pause, Brown Jackson said she did not believe any child should be made to feel they are racist or not value, or feel whether they are victims or oppressors.
She also faced questioning by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) about her faith and whether she would find it offensive if she was criticized for her religious beliefs. While Brown Jackson said she was reluctant to talk about her faith because she recognized the need for the public to have confidence in her ability to separate her personal views.
Democrats also questioned the nominee, with Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) expressing support for her while asking what kind of judge she would be, to which she said her approach as a judge is that they rule "without fear or favour," are independent in responsibilities, and it is her responsibility to be impartial in her rulings.
