The 24th annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is underway in Astana, Kazakhstan. President Xi Jinping of China was the first to arrive, emphasizing cooperation for greater progress. Security is tight as heads of state, observer members, dialogue partners, and the UN Secretary-General convene. Key topics include security, economy, connectivity, and the environment. Belarus is set to join the bloc, expanding it to ten members, representing over 40% of the world's population and nearly a third of global GDP. Notably, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a minister in his place but will visit Russia later. Russian President Vladimir Putin's meeting with Xi Jinping will be closely watched, especially regarding Ukraine and international sanctions.
