A team at the University of Bristol has developed insect-sized robots with flappable wings, potentially doing away with the need for conventional motors. Inspired by bees, the tiny robots use an artificial muscle system called the Liquid-amplified Zipping Actuator (Laza), enabling them to fly across a room at 18 body lengths per second, faster than many organic insects.

The team are hoping their army of mini-monsters will be able to perform tasks ranging from plant pollination to environmental monitoring, and even finding people trapped in dangerous locations such as collapsed buildings.
