Members of the Miami-Dade County Police, fire department, and Hialeah police all participated in a simulated active shooter drill on Wednesday in order to gain experience with reacting to active school shooter calls, regardless of the municipalities they work for.

"In Miami-Dade County, we've had school police here since 1957. So we've had this type of training historically for many, many years. However, the level of training that we're doing now is cutting edge," said Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Edwin Lopez.

Hialeah High School was the setting for the drill, complete with blank shots being fired. Participants could be heard screaming and some wore white t-shirts with bloodstains.

The drill was held as summer break nears an end and before schools return for a new academic year in the fall.
