A capsule containing a sample from asteroid Bennu, the first asteroid sample ever collected by NASA, landed in the Utah desert on Sunday morning.

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft released the capsule Sunday morning following a seven-year journey to Bennu and back.

"We have touchdown!" mission recovery operations announced immediately after the launch, which took place three minutes before it was anticipated.

The recovery team confirmed the capsule had landed and had not been breached 40 minutes after touchdown.

Scientists expect to get approximately 250 grams of rocks and dust from the asteroid, a sample about the size of a cellphone. Canada is expected to get about four per cent of the sample.

OSIRIS-REx is the first sample-return mission Canada has participated in.

The mission will now go off to explore another near-Earth asteroid, Apophis.
