Some Saint-Etienne fans invaded the football pitch and threw flares at the stands after the team was relegated from Ligue 1 following a penalty shootout defeat to Auxerre in a playoff on Sunday. Local French police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

"I simply feel disgusted. It's unbearable, it's not sports anymore. All the boundaries were crossed tonight. ... This was a catastrophic year and it ends in the saddest of ways." One disgruntled supporter said.

The chaos followed a 2-2 aggregate draw after the second leg finished 1-1 at St Etienne's Geoffroy Guichard Stadium before Auxerre won the shootout 5-4.
