Russian and Syrian air forces held joint air strike simulation drills across Syria, the Russian defence ministry said on Tuesday.

The defence ministry said Russian Su-24m, Su-34 and Su-35s aircraft took part in the drills, while Syrian aircraft included MIG-23ml and MIG-29 fighters.

The joint exercises took place at the three Syrian air bases of Khmeimim, Seikal and airfields outside of Damascus, the daily Russian newspaper Izvestia reported.

Russian forces have been present in Syria since 2015 when they helped turn the tide in a civil war in favour of President Bashar al-Assad.

Russian and Syrian government forces have been bolstered in northern Syria where Turkey may soon launch an offensive against Kurdish fighters as Ankara prepares for talks with Moscow, according to Turkish and Syrian rebel leaders.
