A Russian missile went about two kilometres into Polish airspace early Sunday morning before returning to Ukraine, Polish defence minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

"At 4:43 am one of the Russian missiles violated Polish airspace" the minister said, adding "If there was any premise indicating that this object was going in the direction of any targets located in Poland, of course, it would have been shot down and more adequate measures would have been taken."

Moscow has not made any immediate comment on the incident, while Warsaw stated that it would demand an explanation from Russia.

In Ukraine, meanwhile, Russia launched 57 missiles and drones in the early hours of Sunday, including attacks on the capital city Kyiv, and in the western region of Lviv, near the Polish border.
