As delegates from Russia and Ukraine convened in Istanbul, Turkey, to discuss ending the month-long conflict, there were signs of a breakthrough. A Ukrainian negotiator, for example, stated that a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin could happen soon. After the first round of negotiations with the Ukrainians in Istanbul, the Russian delegation expressed optimism, calling the discussions "serious." After multiple rounds of fruitless negotiations, the two parties met face-to-face.
