Rustam, a 50-year-old Ukrainian gas drilling specialist from the Poltava region, spent almost seven years of his life fighting pro-Russian separatists in the east of his country.

In 2014 he enrolled into the Ukrainian armed forces as a volunteer, fought for a year and a half, and was then demobilized. But after a year of civil life, he signed another contract.

Speaking from the frontline in Pisky, eastern Ukraine on Saturday, he said he had hoped for a "peaceful life" after that but couldn't find his place and the army drew him like a magnet. He said he will stay in the military until there is no longer a threat to his hometown.

Russia has sparked concern by Ukraine and the West in recent weeks by massing some 120,000 troops near its border with the former Soviet republic that now wants to join NATO.

Russia has already annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and the West has threatened Moscow with grave sanctions if it invades again, something Russia has repeatedly denied it plans to do.
