Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations defended the country's takeover of the UN Security Council presidency — part of a monthly rotation — in remarks on Monday, and blasted Western nations of making accusations that it would use the role to spread disinformation.

Vasily Nebenzya laid out some plans of his month in the role, including a discussion on arms control, though said it would not focus on a specific country or region.

Asked about one part of the Security Council procedures that would require the president to pass the role to another member if a specific topic involved that member state, Nebenzya said "no" when asked if the issue of Ukraine comes up would he hand the presidency over. He said based on the question, other countries should withdraw from the discussion "who are directly involved in the situation which you are alluding to."

Nebenzya went on to make remarks on some countries calling for Russia to be removed from the presidency, saying there would be no change in the rules and procedure of the presidency, and the order of the role is "well-defined." He added that one piece of misinformation that Western media and officials "are spreading is the situation of Ukrainian children who were allegedly kidnapped from Ukraine and brought to Russia against their will."

The UN assistant secretary-general for human rights, Ilze Brands Kehris, said last week there were credible accusations that Russian forces have sent Ukrainian children to Russia for adoption, according to reports.
