“The first possible consequence is a wider war if Lebanese Hezbollah decides to intervene on Hamas’ behalf. There are unconfirmed reports that Hezbollah has reached out to the Egyptian back-channel to say that if the Israelis go into Gaza on the ground, then Hezbollah will intervene,” Simon said, emphasizing that the reports were unconfirmed but were plausible.
