Residents and tourists staying in communities near Lake Tahoe fled the area on Monday as the Caldor fire, which has been raging for about two weeks, inched closer to the popular resort destination prompting evacuations.

More than 6,800 wildfires have blackened an estimated 1.7 million acres within California this season, putting 2021 on pace to surpass last year's record amount of landscape consumed by flames.

Dry fuel and up-slope canyon winds helped fan the Caldor fire over almost 10,000 more acres since Sunday. The blaze has so far spread across 177,260 acres, damaging 39 residential, commercial and other structures, and destroying 472. The fire has also led to five injuries to firefighters and civilians.
