Renewed calls for King Charles III to renounce Doctrine of Discovery ahead of coronation

There are renewed calls for King Charles III to renounce the Doctrine of Discovery on the eve of his coronation.

The Doctrine of Discovery is based on a 15th century papal decree that was used to justify colonial rule.

The Pope himself has renounced the decree. In a statement, the Vatican said it had been “manipulated” for political purposes by colonial powers to “justify immoral acts against Indigenous peoples that were carried out, at times, without opposition from ecclesial authorities.”

As Britain and the Commonwealth prepare to crown their new monarch, some are calling on the King to follow the Vatican’s example and formally denounce the doctrine himself.
