In Iran, reformist candidate and former health minister Masoud Pezeshkian has been elected president.
The electoral authority says that Pezeshkian got more than 16 million votes out of about 30 million cast in Friday's runoff. He was the only reform candidate allowed to run. His rival, hard-liner Saeed Jalili, an ultraconservative who opposes reviving nuclear negotiations with the West, got fewer than 14 million votes. It was the lowest turnout for a presidential contest since the Islamic Republic was founded, with less than half of eligible voters casting ballots.
