The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the safety of vessels passing through the Red Sea after Houthi attacks on commercial ships, with a “significant escalation” over the past week.

“They could not care less about this council, they don’t even recognize your existence. This is definitely not an Israel problem, this not even a Middle East problem – this is a global problem,” said Israel representative Gilad Erdan.

“The Houthi’s threat in the Red Sea is now forcing ships to go around the horn of Africa, turning a 16-hour transit into a 24-day journey,” Erdan added.

Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and a host of other nations called attacks from the Yemeni-based Houthi a “direct threat to the freedom of navigation” that underpin global trade in “one of the world’s most critical waterways.”

Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen have stepped up attacks on vessels in the Red Sea since November to show their support for Palestinian militant group Hamas fighting Israel in Gaza.
