Safety has been top of mind for commuters who rely on the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), with recent violent incidents triggering renewed calls for better cell service for subway riders who may need to call 911.

While the TTC is equipped with a wireless system capable of allowing cellular connectivity, it's up to service providers to get on board.

A TTC spokesperson tells Global News that all cell users, regardless of carrier, have access to 911 service in the downtown line 1 service between Sheppard West and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, as well as open areas.

According to representatives, Freedom Mobile is the only wireless carrier providing service on the subway system, while the big three of Rogers, Telus and Bell have yet to sign on. Shallima Maharaj has more.
