"It really is the holy grail of hockey cards," Heritage Auctions Consignment director Jason Simonds said of the case of unopened O-Pee-Chee Hockey Cards. Simonds expects this auction to surpass a previous record set by a case of 1986 Fleer Basketball Cards that sold for $1.8 million. Simonds noted that 1986 was Michael Jordan's rookie year. The box of O-Pee-Chee cards is dated 1979 and is expected to contain up to 25 Gretzky rookie cards.

"Everyone wants rookie cards," said Tanner Piper, of the Nut Man card collection shop in Regina. Piper said he's never seen a box like the one up for auction. "This is not just a Regina thing. This is probably the most incredible thing... ever," he said. For the box to come out of Regina, Piper says it couldn't have come from anywhere else.

"All the Americans are definitely saying, 'If you are going to find that anywhere, it's going to be in Canada where there's just so much hockey.'" Piper mused. The auction will be open until Feb. 25, when the box is expected to sell for millions of dollars. The big question is: Will the new owner open the box to see if there is a Wayne Gretzky rookie card inside?
