One of the rarest fish in the world has been spotted for the first time since 1999, on a deep-sea camera off Australia’s coast. The pink handfish gets its name from its oversized ‘hands’ which it uses to ‘walk’ along the sea bed and has only been seen four other times.

Officially on the endangered list, the pink handfish has excited researchers with this latest appearance, as it shows its habitat to be more varied than previously thought, offering hope that the population is larger than expected.

Maybe the handfish just likes keeping to itself. After all, does this guy really look like he wants visitors?
