Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history and Canada’s head of state, died at 96 years old on Thursday.

In light of this historic day, Global News takes a look at the timeline of the queen’s 96-year-old lifespan, from the day she was born in 1926 in London.

According to the Royal Family, the Queen died peacefully in her Scottish residence, Balmoral Castle, and had several members of the Royal Family by her side — including Charles, who is next in line to ascend to the throne and will be known as King Charles III.

News of her death came after Buckingham Palace officials took the rare step of issuing a public comment on her health, saying that doctors had recommended she remain under medical supervision as they were concerned for her health. According to reports, she has experienced “episodic mobility problems” since the end of last year.
