As two of the most well-known figures throughout the British monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana could not have been more different: One reserved with a profound sense of duty, while the other had the capacity to touch the common people.

Diana, Princess of Wales was born in July 1961 in Sandringham, U.K. As the daughter of an earl, though Diana and her family were not royals themselves, they were well-acquainted with the royal family.

That same summer, 35-year-old Queen Elizabeth II was one of the most admired figures in the world, touring Rome and entertaining presidents. But her celebrity status would be nothing compared with the Royalmania, seen a generation later.

When then-Prince Charles reached the age of 30, his father Prince Philip pressed for him to marry. Diana, whom Charles knew and recently dated, seemed perfect and the decision was met with delight by the Queen. What followed was a Royal Wedding of the century and the birth of a royal heir, in a marriage that seemed straight out of a fairytale.

However, the happy ending quickly crumbled as Charles' relationship with an old flame reignited in public display, leading to tension and an eventual divorce. In the years that followed, the relationship between Diana and the Queen would be delicate, unfolding in front of the public’s curious gaze — ending only with Diana’s death in 1997.

Eric Sorensen takes a look at the intertwined lives of these two beloved figures.
