At least 5,000 people are now known to have died in a series of powerful earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the death toll is expected to rise significantly.

The initial 7.8 magnitude tremor was centered north of the Turkish city of Gaziantep. It caused destruction stretching along Turkey's southern border, from the Mediterranean eastwards, also affecting parts of northern Syria. The dimensions of the disaster are enormous - but thousands of lives have also been saved.
