Putin proposes new Wagner boss 1 day after saying mercenary group has no legal basis: report

Following the short-lived rebellion of Russia’s private mercenary team Wagner Group, under the direction of Yevgeny Prigozhin, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly proposed a new leader.

The report comes one day after Putin, 70, said that Wagner Group had no legal basis.

Putin reportedly proposed that a senior mercenary known as "Sedoi” — which means "grey hair" in Russian — command the Wagner Group instead of Yevgeny Prigozhin. Sedoi is reportedly the nom de guerre of Andrei Troshev, one of Wagner Group’s most senior commanders.

Hinting at Troshev being Wagner Group’s head, Russian media reports that Putin told troops "they would have been led by their 'real commander' the whole time,” if they had disobeyed Prigozhin’s orders to revolt and stood firmly with Russia.

Prigozhin, along with his troops, was banished to Belarus on June 24, following his revolt against Russia, where, for one day, he ordered the takeover of the country’s military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don.

Though Prigozhin allegedly met with Putin on June 29, his current whereabouts and status are currently unknown.
