Linda Carty, the United States’ alternate representative to the UN General Assembly told a special meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday that Russia has “no genuine interest” in negotiating an end to its war in Ukraine.

Carty made the comments during a meeting asked for by France, a permanent member of the UNSC, and Mexico.

Instead, Carty said Russia was trying to “break Ukraine’s will to fight by bombing and freezing its civilians into submission.”

Russia responded to the U.S. with claims that it is in fact the West waging war on Russia because of its ongoing military support of Ukraine, adding that the West and the Ukrainian government are using the Ukrainian people as “cannon fodder.”

The meeting comes a day after Russia unleashed a new barrage of missiles on Ukraine, killing two people and destroying homes in the southeast, and causing major power outages according to officials.
