Protests against China's strict "zero-COVID" policy and restrictions on freedoms spread to London, U.K. and Sydney, Australia in a show of solidarity with rare displays of defiance in China over the weekend.

The protests on the mainland were triggered by a deadly fire in China's Xinjiang region last week that killed 10 people who became trapped in their apartments, in a disaster blamed in part on lockdown measures. City officials denied that.

Meanwhile, chanting "from Sydney to Shanghai, democracy will never die," about two hundred protesters gathered outside Sydney Town Hall on Monday to show support for people protesting China's stringent COVID restrictions.

Protesters also gathered in Hong Kong showed solidarity with the anti-COVID lockdown demonstrations on the mainland on Monday.

A small group held white sheets of paper and flowers in silence to protest over COVID-19 restrictions in Chinese cities.

Police quickly arrived at the protest, set up cordons and told the demonstrators to disperse.
