Keith Raniere, the leader of the so-called “sex cult” NXIVM, has been sentenced to 120 years in prison. U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis announced Raniere’s sentence Tuesday after hearing from victims.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Seth DuCharme said he hoped the sentencing delivered “some measure of justice” for the victims of Raniere.
“Certainly the judge’s sentence, which in effect incapacitates Keith Raniere for the rest of his life, should hopefully give them some sense of security and should stand as a warning to others who would participate in similar like conduct that when justice catches up with you—as it did today – it is severe.”
In mid-June of 2019, Raniere was found guilty on seven charges by a jury, including two counts of sex trafficking, racketeering and forced labour conspiracy, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. Other charges included attempted sex trafficking, wire fraud conspiracy and racketeering conspiracy.
Supporters of Raniere said on Tuesday that the NXIVM leader was not given a fair trial.
“It is a traffic day for all of us. We believe that today’s greatest victim is due process, which affects us all,” said Marc Elliot.
Several other people affiliated with NXIVM have pleaded guilty to criminal charges, including Seagram liquor heiress Clare Bronfman, actress Allison Mack, former NXIVM President Nancy Salzman and her daughter Lauren Salzman, who became a star prosecution witness.
